Kitchen + Cooking

During the sacred postpartum window, we really see the ancient wisdom of food as medicine come alive. Spice blends + herbalized ghees are wonderful additions to the postpartum kitchen repertoire, supporting digestion and healing and bringing in a sense of pleasure and beauty. Below we’ll share some nourishing postpartum favorites to add to your pantry.

THERMOSES

I’d put a sturdy thermos in my top 5 recommended items for a mama to have nearby. This way she can always have something warm or hot to sip on…nourishing herbal tea, hearty bone broth, milky Mother’s Chai…

Check out our Birther’s Best Friend and the Ultimate Hot Food Thermoses! Each is stainless steel, vacuum-sealed, and comes with a carrying case. Plus the Food Thermos has TWO bowls built in! Are you all in!? Get both and save with the Sacred Window Thermos Duo.

SWEET LACTATION GHEE

This herbalized ghee from Anjali Apothecary supports digestion AND lactation. Craftswoman Anne Heart notes: “The herbs boost immunity, are anti-inflammatory and add moisture in the digestive tract and support the reproductive system of women. The ghee has a naturally sweet flavor from the herbs.” Yum! Purchase Sweet Lactation Ghee here.

ORGANIC ROSE PETAL JAM

Ah, rose! A queen flower for the heart, mind, and soul. Maker Radha Schwaller of Bliss Alchemy decribes her Organic Rose Petal Jam as a “delicious treat to soothe the heart and mind. This Ayurvedic medicinal jam will uplift the spirit and soothe sadhaka pitta, which can be disturbed in postpartum time with the many emotions that accompany becoming a new mama.” Add a spoonful to your favorite warm baked treats, such as Cardamom Shortbread.

Nourishing Herbal Support

Nourishing with herbs is a time-honored way of tending women and families throughout the childbirth spectrum. We are so excited to have some amazing herbals for new mothers. These support healing and digestion, and several are specifically supportive to breastfeeding.

PANCHAKOLA GHEE FOR POSTPARTUM

We are honored to feature this Ayurvedic postpartum classic healing remedy from maker Sunny Rose Healey of Mamāyurveda Medicinals. Panchakola (5-spice) Ghee improves digestion, helping rekindle the digestive fire (agni) beginning right after birth. Learn more and get yours here.

ELIXIRS FOR BREASTFEEDING MAMAS

Maker Krsna Jivani of Bhakti Botanica has created Mother’s Milk: Lactation Elixir with “some of the best herbs to support the production of milk, rejuvenate the tissues, and to support lactation while still keeping vata dosha balanced for the early postpartum mamas.” And Meaghan Thompson-Moore of Mountain Birthworks offers tasty Lactation Love, “an herbal blend of three traditionally used herbs known to support lactation.”

POSTPARTUM TEA

Postpartum Tea from Mountain Birthworks provides “plant sources of vitamins and minerals, helps to balance hormones, assists with healthy lactation, and provides emotional support.” Mother’s Milk Tea from Anjali Apothecary helps bring in an abundance of milk for mama and baby.” Additionally, this yummy blend contains herbs that are “supportive of digestion and are rejuvenative, both much needed after the birth of a baby.”

HAPPY BABY GLYCERITE

A yummy and safe tonic just for Baby. Maker Meaghan Thompson-Moore crafted this glycerite to “soothe cranky, restless babies, ease colic pains, provide comfort for teething babies, and promote restful sleep in newborns and children.”

Bath + Beauty

Let yourself feel thoroughly nurtured and BEAUTIFUL in the postpartum. Yes, yes! Let your body + beauty rituals uplift your soul + mood and be a true honoring of your spirit. A dear friend describes the body as “a sacred vessel for spirit”…let yourself revel in that truth.

Here are a few gems for giving yourself divine body care.

BODY/MASSAGE OIL

Abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage) is one of the pillars of Ayurvedic postpartum care. Sneha is the Sanskrit term for oil, and it means “love.” If there is *one* self-care practice I most recommend inviting into your sacred postpartum window, it is gentle, loving oil massage – whether you provide it to yourself or receive it from a loved one or practitioner. Learn more about this phenomenal form of liquid love in this interview with the beautiful Ameya Duprey.

Several of our lovely makers supply body oils. Head here to find handmade oils from Anjali Apothecary, Mother + Pearl Potions, and Mountain Birthworks.

SITZ BATH BLEND

Nurture tender post-birth tissues with Mother Mountain Soaking Salts, a magical “soothing blend of herbs and flowers perfect for a postpartum sitz soaking bath. All home-grown and wild-crafted from the Alpine mountains of Colorado.”

BREASTFEEDING NIPPLE SALVE

Mama Ritual Tit-Ease is a soothing balm for tender breastfeeding nipples. Makers Mother + Pearl offer this salve as an herbal potion ritual: “In sacred service to your babe and to yourself, anoint the milky source with Tit-ease to nourish the tender skin, restore suppleness, and infuse calm within. Apply as a healing meditation: with breath, beauty and blessings.”

BABY BUM SALVE

A handy go-to at home and in your diaper bag – simple, gentle, herb-infused salve for Baby’s bottom! Keep this close by as Baby grows and apply lovingly for soothing any skin irritations and minor boo-boo’s. Calendula and plantain are beloved Wise Woman allies!

Education + Support

Postpartum – especially the first 6 or so weeks – is an important time to rest, receive, and heal. I don’t typically suggest embarking on new studies during this time but rather focusing energy on healing, integrating, and enjoying this mystical, marvelous time. That being said, it is awesome to have some beloved resources on hand to refer to as you feel so inclined.

If you participated in our DIY course for parents, Empowered Postpartum Care, you can absolutely refer to the abundant resources here at any time postpartum. You can always print the notes included for ease of reference.

LIGHT ON THE SACRED WINDOW

Another sweet choice for digestible, accessible support is our Postpartum Care with Ayurveda: Light on the Sacred Window mini course. You, your loved ones, and those on your postpartum care team will be able to quickly apply the information here in practical ways to enhance any support measures.

TOUCHING HEAVEN

I personally loved having Ysha Oake’s Touching Heaven on hand during my third sacred postpartum window. This is a two volumen e-book ~ the first is focused on care (this I read multiple times while postpartum) and the second is an amazing cookbook with SO many gems of wisdom in the notes & tips shared after each recipe. These books won’t disappoint – if you didn’t grab them during pregnancy, it’s still a great idea to get them during your early postpartum weeks/months (the sooner the better!)

DIRECT SUPPORT

In the beautiful and sacred postpartum time, receiving nurturing support is vital. It’s never too late to connect with a postpartum doula, Ayurvedic practitioner, or other caregiver of your choice. Search our online Directory of Conscious Postpartum Caregivers to find local or virtual support.
